First edition, with the binding in Rosove's variant 'a'. This is the scarce official account of the ill-financed Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904, that nonetheless made important contributions to the scientific exploration of the Antarctic, undertaking the first oceanographic exploration of the Weddell Sea and charting the northern part of the Caird Coast. Rudmose Brown was the expedition botanist, Mossman was meteorologist, and Pirie was surgeon and geologist: the three collaborated to write this popular narrative, which proved to be an 'outstanding account. The text substantiates the important events, supplies a look at day-to-day life on the expedition and describes many of the most interesting scientific findings' (Rosove).
