Top page edges gilt. Possible evidence of neat library stamp removal to spine. Previous ownership inscription in pencil on half title. Discreet Library stamp (Botany Division, Christchurch NZ) to 1st page chapter 1 but no other library markings. The account of the first expedition to make winter camp on the Antarctic mainland and the first to use dog teams. Spine slightly worn and faded, corners bumped, some slight foxing mainly to prelims, frontispiece and tissue paper guard. A very nice copy. The expedition, sponsored by Sir George Newnes and led by Borchgrevink, in the Ship "Southern Cross", was the first to establish a base on the main body of the continent, and the first scientific party to winter over.
