Previous owners inscriptin on front end paper otherwise contents clean, appears unread. In 1948 Charles Swithinbank, still an undergraduate at Oxford, applied to join the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition. A year later, after training in Swedish Lappland, at 22 he was the youngest member as he set out to spend two and a half years in the splendid isolation of Antarctica. The author joined the expedition on graduating from Cambridge and has since visited the Antarctic over 20 times - a fascinating insight into that first expedition.
