When in mid-1901 the author accepted an offer to be physicist with Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Royal Geographic Society Antarctic Expedition he was less than a year back from his first venture to the southern polar regions. It was Christmas Eve 1901 when the Discovery, specially built for the expedition, sailed from Lyttelton, New Zealand for the Antarctic, on Scott's first and successful exploration voyage there.
