    Description 2nd Lea and Blanchard issue; Rosove 353.B2.Octavo 8vo, Vol III, xi, 438pp, (14pp, publisher advertisements) 1 folding map, 60 woodcuts in text. Vol IV, xiii, 539pp, (I), 3 maps (2 folding), 38 woodcuts intext. Original dark brown cloth decoratively stamped in blind. Boards with gilt eagle on shield on front cover gilt titling and and anchor to spine. With this voyage the United States entered a field of endeavour long dominated by Britain, France and to a lesser extent Russia. This is the narrative for the expedition, a lavishly produced work, but it was supported by several specialist scientific volumes produced by the savants who accompanied the expedition. The Antarctic content of the work is of especial significance "In January and February 1840, sighted the Antarctic continent and followed its coastline for a distance of more than fifteen hundred miles. he was the first to definitely announce the existence of the Antarctic continent" (Lydenberg & Haskell). Vol III Covers worn and faded, browning of papers, some foxing; Vol IV Ex Libris, covers worn and nearly detached, piece from spine missing,browning of papers, some foxing . Stereotyped edition with statement to that effect on copyright page. Preceded by the rare and valuable limited editions in quarto and by the first trade edition in octavo. This edition was unabridged so far as the text is concerned, but the illustrations were reduced in number and quality and there was no atlas volume. heavily foxed throughout. Text in good condition.
