Shelf wear, spine softening, corners bumped. Age toning to end paper maps. Contents clean. In 1876, James Gordon Bennett jr, owner of the New York Herald bought the barque-rigged steamship "Jeanette" for the purpose of getting to the North Pole. In June 1879 the ship, under command of Captain DeLong, departed San Francisco on what was to become one of the most tragic and heroic expeditions in Arctic exploration.
