The story of the USS Skate, the atomic submarine sent north to answer the question of whether a submarine could safely operate in the Arctic Ocean, written by her commander, James Calvert, who directed both history-making voyages in 1958 and 1959 which proved that a submarine could safely navigate under the shifting ice pack and then surface through the frozen polar ice cap.
