Endpapers show route of the USS Skate and its internal compartments viewed from the starboard side. Original covers in unclipped dust jacket. Previous owners neat inscription on end paper otherwise contents clean. Shelf wear, dust jacket has small repaired splits and the odd piece missing, some minor spotting to page edges, overall a nice copy. The story of the USS Skate, the atomic submarine sent north to answer the question of whether a submarine could safely operate in the Arctic Ocean, written by her commander, James Calvert, who directed both history-making voyages in 1958 and 1959 which proved that a submarine could safely navigate under the shifting ice pack and then surface through the frozen polar ice cap.
