Dated SIGNATURE SIGNED by the author on verso half title. Original covers in PHOTOCOPIED dust jacket. Shelf wear, covers slightly grubby and small hole in the cloth on the front cover. Some spotting, mainly to prelims and page edges, contents clean. The author was a lecturer in Zoology and made this voyage on the Discovery II expedition. ''It was written in odd half-hours in the routine of a ship's work, frequently in heavy seas, with the author's typewriter lashed to the cabin table. It has the sting of the salt-spray in its pages, a purely personal account of life in the Antarctic, among the whalers in South Georgia and on board the Royal Research Ship Discovery II. We must go back to Melville's Moby Dick for anything to equal the whaling chapters.''
