    Description 1st Edition; Volume 2 xiv, 396 pages, illustrated with woodcuts, vignettes, 42 photos,tables maps, charts, many folding, frontispiece is a colour folding map. Previous owners bookplate on front end paper. End paper hinges splitting, text block sound, some minor spotting. Contents clean. Shelf wear, some marks, fading to covers. Note this is Volume 2 ONLY. The Challenger was a Royal Navy corvette converted into the first dedicated oceanographic vessel and its circumnavigation of the globe is considered the birth of modern oceanography, these volumes cover only the beginning and end of the voyage and were intended for the general reader. Thomson was chief scientific officer on the 'Challenger' during its famous voyage to inspect the physical and biological conditions of the sea-bed. These volumes, providing the earliest account of the voyage, preceded the official account by three years and were the only ones Thomson lived to complete. They represent probably the most important oceanographic work of the nineteenth century.
