Ex Library with usual stamps, numbers, bookplates etc., Shelf wear. covers heavily worn, spine split, stained, frayed. Inner hinges split and front and rear end papers rubbed. Inner text block shaken but all complete. Sold as a reading Copy. This was the final book written by geographer and explorer. On the 29th of January 1916 while reading by candlelight in bed the bedclothes went on fire, he was overcome by smoke and died the following day. The books was finished by his friend Guillemard and published in 1921, five years after his death. This comprehensive account of polar expeditions from earliest times until Scott's doomed final journey to the South Pole in 1912. Markham's active involvement in polar exploration spanned 60 years and ranged from the search of Franklin to masterminding Scott's first expedition. Highly acclaimed upon publication it is still regarded as one of the most important contributions on the subject.
