Shelf wear, top and bottom of spine softening, closed repaired tear to half title page, age toning to pages, printed numbers on rear end paper, no other markings. In photocopied dust jacket for protection. In 1876, James Gordon Bennett Jnr, owner of the New York Herald bought the barque-rigged steamship "Jeannette" for the purpose of getting to the North Pole. In June 1879 the ship, under command of Captain DeLong, departed San Francisco on what was to become one of the most tragic and heroic expeditions in Arctic exploration.
