    Description 1895 New Colonial Edition: xii, map, 452 pages, 24 pages publishers catalogue. . illustrated, map, b/w woodcuts, line drawings. Original covers with silver titling. Damp damaged, damp staining and wrinkling to many pages but still very readable. Front end paper. Possibly SIGNED 2 pencil signatures apparently Fridtjof Nansen and Thomas Watkins on front end paper, prize presentation dated 1895 verso front end paper, also pencil sketch of a pump at end of catalogue. The narrative of Nansen and Otto Sverdrup, in the company of four others, and their journey to East Greenland to cross the ice cap on skis. Includes descriptions of equipment and preparations, the voyage to East Greenland and challenges related to penetration of its ice belt, a review of previous attempts to cross the ice cap, and a detailed account of the expedition's crossing of the inland ice "Umivik-Godthaab" on skis in August and September of 1888. Interesting observations on Eskimo Life, and notes on skiing. The illustrations are based on photos and sketches by Nansen and others.
