Contemporary personal bookplate to half title signed and dated 1938 otherwise contents clean. Some spotting to page edges, prelims and rear pages. Rear end paper split at hinge, covers clean. "It was written in odd half-hours in the routine of a ship's work, frequently in heavy seas, with the author's typewriter lashed to the cabin table. It has the sting of the salt-spray in its pages, a purely personal account of life in the Antarctic, among the whalers in South Georgia, and on board the Royal Research Ship Discovery II. We must go back to Melville's Moby Dick for anything to equal the whaling chapters.''
