Sold as a Reading Copy. The narrative of Nansen and Otto Sverdrup, in the company of four others, and their journey to East Greenland to cross the ice cap on skis. Includes descriptions of equipment and preparations, the voyage to East Greenland and challenges related to penetration of its ice belt, a review of previous attempts to cross the ice cap, and a detailed account of the expedition's crossing of the inland ice "Umivik-Godthaab" on skis in August and September of 1888. Interesting observations on Eskimo Life, and notes on skiing. The illustrations are based on photos and sketches by Nansen and others.
