"About half the book deals with Bowers' Antarctic trip. Extensive quotations from other sources, primarily Cherry-Garrard's Worst Journey . . . (in which much of Bowers' Pole Trip diary was first published) and much from Bowers' weekly letters home. The letters are not easily found elsewhere." Conrad, Bibliography of Antarctic Exploration.
