Johansen was a member of Nansen's FRAM expedition - "so eager to take part in the expedition, as no other post could be found for him, he accepted that of stoker" - and his companion on the famous journey over the ice towards the north pole and then to Franz Josef Land. Johansen's account is considerablly scarcer than Nansen's best selling FARTHEST NORTH.
