Original covers in price clipped dust jacket. Appears unread, contents clean. The removal of dogs from the Antarctic followed an amendment to the Antarctic Treaty in 1991. Environmentalists concerned that the distemper-like virus which had affected the seal population in the North Sea may be linked to dogs, pressed for this change. (Subsequently the Antarctic dogs were proven to be distemper free). The whole story: from collecting the dogs and shipping them down from Greenland and Labrador; through developing aspects of training, feeding, breeding and travel; to the advent of motorised vehicles, the phasing out of dogs and the final journey that took them to new homes in Canada. The book includes contributions from some fifty of Antarctica's explorers and scientists, many who loved and owed their lives to these dogs.
